'No, they are not!' Anxiety had her voice rising a little again despite her defiant glare.

`Whether I am or not has nothing to do with it! But use the master bedroom, you will!' Dev's own voice started to roughen now. Òr do you think the most likely method to convince your relatives we're a loving couple is by occupying separate rooms?' The goading note returned.

Raina bit at her lip vexedly. `But they're not even here!' she protested.

`Not at the moment, maybe, but once those wires go out tomorrow informing them of the situation, you're as aware as I am that that state of affairs could change very shortly!'

`S-so until it does, why. ..'

`Because in the meantime there are others here who also might find such circumstances somewhat odd,'

he broke in satirically. Ànd a carelessly imparted word at a later date could be exactly what you don't want, sweetheart. Just remember, it's your family estate that's on the line here, not mine!'

With a furious mutter beneath her breath, Raina pushed past him towards the master bedroom, knowing only too well-as she was sure he did too!-that having proceeded this far there was no way she would back down now. However, that didn't stop her sniping from the doorway, `Compared to being forced to live as man and wife with you, even that could be eminently preferable!'

`Never mind, sweetheart,' he consoled on a taunting, laughing note. `Who knows? You may even find yourself enjoying it.'

Òh!' She sent him a baleful glare before storming into the room and slamming the door between them.

The conceited baboon! she railed wrathfully. After having blackmailed her into this situation, did he really believe she would ever welcome his attentions? Hah! Didn't he have a lot to learn!

Looking about her cursorily at the pale lemon and white decorated room with its hand carved furniture and king size bed, which brought forth another disgruntled grimace, Raina kicked off her shoes and stalked across the rug strewn, polished floor to begin removing her dress and silk slip, both of which she then tossed on to the end of the bed. Her hat, which she had left in the sitting room when they first returned, she now discovered to have already been placed in the top of the wardrobe where her own small selection of clothes was hanging. She would have to remember to ask in the telegram being forwarded to her mother for all her apparel, etcetera, to be forwarded by air, she mused. She was becoming tired of having nothing but the blue and white silk to wear for dinner every evening.
